Champagne house Moët & Chandon
The Magic of the World's Largest Champagne House
Moët & Chandon champagne is undoubtedly the most well-known champagne brand. In its over 260-year history, the champagne house has built a great reputation. The brand has a distinctive style that radiates success and glamour. Moët & Chandon Champagne House is located in the village of Épernay on the famous Avenue de Champagne. On the over 1150 hectares of vineyards with 50% grand crus and 25% premier crus, grapes are cultivated in the best conditions.
In every significant liquor store and wine shop, Moët & Chandon champagne can be found. Despite the enormous production and the sale of more than 30 million bottles of champagne per year, the house still maintains a very high level of quality and continues to improve the brand. When tasted, the Brut Impérial still stands out from other brands for its clarity, freshness, elegance, and balance. The most well-known champagne from Moët & Chandon is, of course, the popular Brut Imperial, but also the Brut Rosé Impérial and the various vintage champagnes are highly cherished. The Cuvée Dom Pérignon, also known as the king of champagnes, is the flagship of Moët & Chandon.
The Mission of Founder Jean-Remy Moët
Claude Moët started in 1743 in Reims under the name Moët & Co with the production and sale of sparkling wine and quickly became very successful. During this time, with King Louis XV on the throne, there was a growing demand for sparkling wine. When his son Victor, together with his grandson Jean-Remy Moët, took over the leadership, the business grew from a family business to a multinational company that could count many famous names from that time among its clientele. In 1832, son-in-law Pierre Gabriel Chandon took over the company and changed the name to Moët et Chandon.
When one thinks of Moët & Chandon, one thinks of success and glamour. The famous champagne brand has a history of great achievements. The mission of grandson Jean-Remy Moët was to conquer the world with his Moët champagne, and he certainly succeeded. Moët & Chandon champagne is among the most popular champagnes in the world.
The friendship between Jean-Remy Moët and Napoleon certainly contributed to the great successes of the champagne house. Napoleon was a good customer. The addition of 'Brut Impérial' means 'imperial' and is named after Napoleon. Due to the connections with the emperor, other heads of state, kings, and dignitaries, who visited Napoleon from all over Europe, discovered Moët's champagne. Thus, it became the champagne of aristocracy and celebrities. The image of success and glamour continued, and in the 19th century, it was the drink of artistic Paris. Trendy establishments of that time, such as Maxim’s, Moulin Rouge, and the Savoy, served Moët, and in the roaring 20s, champagne was the drink of the international jet set.
The History of Moët & Chandon: From Family Business to Multinational
The history of Moët & Chandon is characterized by great successes. The rapid growth of the company in the 18th and 19th centuries continued into the 20th century. In 1962, the company went public on the Paris Stock Exchange, after which it expanded even further. The champagne houses Ruinart and Mercier, and Christian Dior perfumes were acquired. Moët & Chandon merged with Hennessy Cognac in 1971, creating the company Moët Hennessy. Moët Hennessy produces not only champagne and cognac but also other spirits and various wines. The champagne brands Veuve Cliquot, Krug, and Dom Pérignon now belong to Moët Hennessy. In 1987, Moët Hennessy merged with the fashion house Louis Vuitton, and LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy) was established, still the largest conglomerate of luxury goods in the world.
