The French 75 Cocktail

The French 75 is a refreshing cocktail that combines the bright flavors of lemon and gin with the delightful bubbles of champagne. It’s a perfect choice for those who enjoy a fresh yet sophisticated drink. The French 75 cocktail originated during World War I and is named after the powerful French 75 mm field gun. The mix of gin, lemon, sugar, and champagne was considered so strong, it felt like being hit by that famous cannon—refined, but with a definite impact. Since then, it has remained a timeless favorite at elegant gatherings and brunches.

Ingredients:

  • 30 ml gin
  • 15 ml freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 15 ml simple syrup
  • 60 ml champagne (preferably brut)
  • Garnish: lemon peel
    Ice cubes

Preparation:

  1. Shake: Fill a cocktail shaker with ice cubes and add the gin, lemon juice, and simple syrup. Shake vigorously until well chilled.
  2. Strain: Strain the mixture into a flute or another champagne glass.
  3. Top Off: Top the cocktail with 60 ml of chilled champagne. Pour slowly to keep the bubbles from escaping too quickly.
  4. Garnish: Stir gently and add a thin strip of lemon peel as garnish.

Serving Tips:

Variations: For an extra twist, add a dash of orange blossom water or a few drops of Angostura bitters for more depth of flavor.

Glassware: The traditional flute glass is ideal for serving a French 75, as it preserves the bubbles and enhances the elegant appearance.

Champagne Suggestions

A French 75 pairs well with a crisp, dry champagne. For this cocktail, we recommend a Brut Champagne, which is dry and refreshing due to its low sugar content.
Below are some suggestions you can use in this cocktail:

Moët & Chandon Brut Impérial
A fresh and seductive taste, perfect for creating a classic French 75.
Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label
Known for its rich and full-bodied flavor, this champagne adds depth to a French 75.

Cheers!

The French 75 strikes the perfect balance between sophistication and freshness, blending the complexity of gin with the sparkle of champagne. This cocktail is an excellent choice for a special occasion or as a luxurious aperitif. Cheers to (and with!) a timeless classic!
