How much champagne do you need?
Planning a celebration, dinner, or special occasion and wondering how much champagne you should buy? The number of bottles you need depends on the number of guests, the type of event, and how generously you plan to serve.
In this guide, you will learn how many glasses you can pour from a bottle of champagne and how to calculate the right number of bottles for your occasion. This helps you avoid running short, or buying more than necessary.
How many glasses are in a bottle of champagne?
Different bottle sizes contain different amounts of champagne. The table below shows how many glasses you can typically pour from each bottle size, based on a standard serving of 125 ml per glass.
| Bottle size | Volume | Number of glasses (125 ml) |
|---|---|---|
| Piccolo | 200 ml | 2 small glasses |
| Demi | 375 ml | 3 glasses |
| Standard bottle | 750 ml | 6 glasses |
| Magnum | 1.5 litres | 12 glasses |
| Jeroboam | 3 litres | 24 glasses |
| Methuselah | 6 litres | 48 glasses |
| Salmanazar | 9 litres | 72 glasses |
| Balthazar | 12 litres | 96 glasses |
| Nebuchadnezzar | 15 litres | 120 glasses |
What affects the number of glasses per bottle?
Although a standard bottle usually provides about six glasses, the actual number may vary slightly. This mainly depends on the glass size and how you pour.
- Glass size: when using a narrow champagne flute filled to about two thirds, you will usually pour six glasses from one bottle. Larger glasses will result in fewer servings.
- Pouring style: pouring slowly helps prevent foam loss and ensures you get the maximum number of glasses from each bottle.
- Opening technique: champagne can be lost when opening the bottle. Learn how to open champagne correctly to avoid unnecessary waste.
How many bottles of champagne do you need?
Now that you know how many glasses you can pour from one bottle, it becomes much easier to calculate how many bottles you need. The right amount depends mainly on the type of occasion.
- For a toast: a short toast usually requires about 100 ml per person. From one standard bottle, you can pour approximately 7 to 8 smaller glasses.
- For a dinner: during dinner, champagne is often served in multiple rounds. A useful guideline is 1 bottle for every 2 to 3 guests, depending on the length of the dinner.
- For a party: if champagne is served alongside other drinks, 1 bottle for every 4 to 5 guests is generally sufficient.
Helpful calculation:
Number of guests × glasses per person ÷ glasses per bottle = bottles required.
Tips for pouring champagne efficiently
- Pour the glass at a slight angle to reduce foam.
- Use narrow champagne flutes to keep the bubbles longer.
- Serve champagne chilled between 7 and 10°C for the best flavour and mousse.
